Meet Nicky Phillips, our 2016 Artist in Residence
Phillips, an award winning musical theatre writer, was a featured composer in “An Evening Celebrating Emerging Female Composers,” with Tony Nominee, Christiane Noll, singing one of her songs. Winner of the 2014 Jean Banks Award for Outstanding Achievement in Musical Theatre, Nicky has composed and written lyrics for works nominated for Betty Mitchell Awards for Outstanding Production of a Musical and Best New Musical at the Playwrights Guild of Canada Awards. She was the arranger and pianist for the Council for Canadian American Relations 40th Gala, asked to write an original song for Tony Nominee, Colm Wilkinson (Le Mis & Phantom) and has had songs featured in Lady & The Vamp at the Laurie Beechman Theatre, Blame Canada at 54 Below and the New Work Series at the New York Theatre Barn. Two Songs she contributed to the Well Songs Project were performed by Broadway talent this past May to children and families at the York Theatre.
Nicky graduated from the Ryerson University, where she majored in Theatre Acting, and went on to train in Piano and Clarinet at the Royal Conservatory of Music and trained in Musical Arrangement at Berklee College of Music.
The Curious George Cottage Artist Residency is open to professional and emerging artists in the visual, performing, and literary arts, and provides an opportunity to pursue and share art, and the artistic process in the inspirational setting of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. This year’s residency runs from August 1st to the 15th .
Through each Artist-in-Residence, students and community members are encouraged to understand the role of the artist in contemporary society, to engage in the creative process, and to think critically about the arts by attending public programs such as workshops, performances, presentations and exhibits, and by interacting with the artist during open studio hours.
This annual residency is supported through the generosity of Ms. Lay Lee Ong and The Curious George Foundation, which provides a $5000 stipend to one artist each year.
